Ian Douglas
Director
BEng CEng MIStructE

Ian established Design ID in 2005 as a design led engineering practice with the aim of providing a service focused on working with Architects to achieve exceptional design in the build environment.

Ian originally studied Structural Engineering with Architectural Design at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh and graduated top of his year in 1996 after being awarded the Watt Club Medal for achievement. Initially working for Arup in London and subsequently Glasgow he was involved in landmark projects such as the Royal Opera House in Covant Garden and ‘Homes for the Future’ at Glasgow Green. Following a return to Northern Ireland in 1999, Ian joined Mott MacDonald in Belfast and played an integral part of developing their structural capability; introducing new technology and creativity to their design process. He worked on a variety of retail, education and industrial projects and developed relationships with a number of leading Architects.

Jonathan Macauley
Director
BEng CEng MIStructE MIEI

Studied Architectural Engineering at Queen’s University in Belfast and graduated top of his year in 2001 with the IStructE Award. His initial career was spent working on large scale industrial and education projects at home and overseas with Mott MacDonald. Jonathan later worked for Irish practice O’Connor Sutton Cronin and was able to develop his creative and practical flair on several multi-million Euro office and mixed-use developments. In 2006 he was nominated for the Chartered Engineer of the Year by the Institution of Engineers of Ireland.

In 2007 Jonathan joined former colleague Ian as a partner of Design ID to further develop the ethos already established.
Jonathan has been a guest lecturer at the University of Ulster’s Art College and tutors at the School of Planning, Architecture and Civil Engineering at Queen’s University. He continues to produce bespoke furniture and sculptures influenced by the mathematical principles whilst applying the hands-on knowledge to engineering solutions. Jonathan also sits on the assessment panel for new technical papers published by the Institution of Structural Engineers.

Stephen Smalley
Regional Director
BEng CEng MICE

Stephen has a number of years experience in the construction industry, after graduating from Nottingham Trent University in 1999 with an honours degree in Structural & Civil Engineering.
In those years he has gained experience in many traditional and modern methods of construction including steel frame, concrete, timber and load bearing masonry design. He has also led the engineering on notable large and smaller scale commercial, education, industrial and high-rise developments in the UK and overseas. Stephen has been privileged to have worked on such a range of projects and with inspiring individuals, including world-wide industry leaders. He truly believes in engaging fully with every member of the design team, to ensure the Clients brief is fulfilled, and that every project holds a legacy to be proud of.
The environment must be at the forefront of all we do in our industry both now and when considering the life of the project and beyond. Stephen has designed with ‘zero-carbon’ materials, considering both the embodied and sequestered carbon, however no matter what material is used, he is passionate about lean design – limiting the volume of material used is paramount, and Stephen has developed tools and methods for benchmarking designs at every stage of the project to manage both risk/cost and eCO2.

Having started his career with Contractor RG Carter, Stephen has a keen eye for constructability and building sequencing, and as such is able to understand and overcome issues at the early project stages - minimising project risks and increasing cost certainty during the construction process.
Before joining Design ID, Stephen worked for Ramboll (whitbybird) and was involved in a number of specialist Engineering groups, including the Technical Excellence representative for the Cambridge office, and chair of the Ramboll High-Rise Task Group.

Stephen is enthusiastic to engage with the industry, having given talks to the ICE, IStructE, Concrete Society, and St Petersburg (Russia) Government on public procurement, as well as presenting on his experience from a structural viewpoint in a debate on the ‘Collaboration for Change: Edge Commission report the Future of Professionalism’. Stephen is also guest tutor at Queens University Belfast, and the University of Ulster School of Planning. In 2005 Stephen was runner-up in the Institution of Structural Engineers, Young Structural Engineer of the Year.
