Greg Shevlin
Structural Engineer

Greg graduated with a Master’s degree in “Structural Engineering with Architecture” from Queen’s University Belfast in 2019. He has rejoined Design ID as a Structural Engineer having previously completed a year’s placement with the company.

During his time with Design ID he has worked on projects ranging from regular steel frames and masonry buildings to bespoke structural staircases and connection design. Greg has a keen interest in structural domestic projects as well as projects which are more unique in their nature and require a certain level of detail.

Greg is a former member of the IStructE NI Young Members’ Group in which he spent several years becoming associated with other engineers in the community and is also involved in ongoing research projects with his former university.

Outside of work Greg spends most of his time outside of work relaxing with coffee and watching his favourite football team Arsenal play, but not necessarily winning.

Niall O'Hagan

Niall graduated with a BEng(Hons) in Civil Engineering from UUJ in 2004. Having worked for a number of consultancies over the years, Niall has gained a lot of experience in highway and drainage design, for both major highway and housing schemes as well as smaller individual projects. He joined Design ID in July 2019 as a Civil Engineer.

In his spare time, Niall likes running, and is part of the Jog Off Castlewellan running club, and is also heavily involved in his local GAA Club, where he helps coach underage hurling.

Curtis graduated from Ulster University in 2017 with a master’s degree in Civil Engineering with Infrastructure Engineering. During his studies he undertook a number of periods of site based placement with GRAHAM construction, giving him a valuable insight into industry practices.
Since graduating Curtis has gained experience working on a wide range of projects, from large steel and concrete frames to domestic alterations.
Curtis is a former member of the IStructE NI Young members group where he acted as a liaison to Ulster University students.

Niamh Treanor

Niamh has just completed her Masters of Structural Engineering with Architecture, with a First Class Honors, from Queen’s University Belfast.
She had first gained insight into the company in her 3rd Year at Queen’s, whilst working on a Skyscraper project partnered with Design ID, which subsequently led to her keen interest in the company’s works. She is excited to start her structural engineering journey here on the bridges team.
Niamh is heavily involved with her local Gaelic football team and has numerous honors from her experience on both the County Monaghan and Queen’s Ladies O’Connor Cup panels. She also enjoys singing in her local Parish choir, playing the piano and baking cakes in her free time.

Elena studied Building Engineering in Barcelona and graduated top of her year with an special mention to the best end-of-degree projects at the ei! awards by Pompeu Fabra University. During this period, she was awarded with an Erasmus Intensive Programme scholarship in Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences, Finland. There she took part on a workshop called “Building with sustainable resources” where her team won with the third prize with special mention for the structural solution.
After finalizing this period, she decided to broaden her knowledge of structures tanking a Master Degree in Structural Engineering at Polytechnic University of Madrid graduating at 2015. It was then that she realized her passion about Structural Design.

Her initial career started working as a Graduate on middle-sized scale residential, education and sportive projects in Spain with BIS structures. During this period, she took part of the BIM and productivity group, looking to find the most optimum and productive processes.

In 2017, when she moved to London, Elena join Design ID.

Elena is a person who loves being in continuous learning and her key interest now are learn more about material optimisation and parametric design, in order to find the equilibrium between sustainability and rational design.

Sam graduated with a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from Queen’s University Belfast in 2017. During his time at university he completed two placements with Mott MacDonald Bentley in the clean water sector. He spent the majority of his time with MMB working on a £3M Rapid Gravity Filter refurbishment scheme, gaining an appreciation for water infrastructure, resourcing and treatment processes.

During his dissertation studies in free-form compression only structures, Sam developed an interest in structural engineering, which ultimately led him to a graduate position at Design ID in July 2017.

Luke studied Architectural Engineering at Cardiff University graduating with a Master’s Degree in 2013. He began his career with Atkins Ltd based in Croydon working primarily in the railway sector, where he spent time undertaking bridge assessments, strengthening designs, as well as working as part of a multidisciplinary team on the outer stations of the Crossrail project.

Following 3 years in Croydon Luke transferred to the Belfast office where he continued to develop his experience in bridge assessments as well as expanding his capabilities in reinforced concrete water retaining structures, retaining walls, and foundation design.

Luke joined Design ID in 2018 and is continuing his professional development and progress towards Chartership.

James graduated from Imperial College London in 2010 with a Master's degree in Civil Engineering. He completed placements at Waterman Structures in Birmingham and Price & Myers in London during university holidays. Following this James joined Walsh where he worked on large reinforced concrete framed structures for leading clients in London. Notable projects, primarily in the hotel and residential sectors, include Hilton London Bankside, 5 Miles Street Vauxhall, Nobu Hotel Shoreditch and Thurston Point Lewisham. After 5 years at Walsh, James joined the Design ID London team in October 2017. In his spare time James writes electronic music.

Carlos Rojao

Carlos graduated with a Master’s degree in Structural Engineering with Architecture from Queen’s University Belfast in 2019, with a First Class Honours and winning the QUB Professor Long Innovation Award for his work in student structural engineering design projects. In university, he developed a passion for the design and durability of structures, winning the CIWM Best Project Award for his 3rd year research project in studying the durability of concretes incorporating novel supplementary cementitious materials.

He undertook his first industrial placement as an architectural intern but started his engineering career predominantly with Farrans Construction in 2016, gaining extensive on-site experience on multiple large educational, new-build and refurbishment projects, as a site engineer and design coordinator.
By joining Design ID in a graduate position, Carlos aims is gain extensive experience in structural engineering in the buildings team and is excited to start his journey. He is currently the Secretary of the IStructE Young Members Group, responsible for the organisation of the IStructE’s most popular events among the young engineer community.

Rebecca Hyndman

Rebecca graduated with a Master’s degree in Structural Engineering with Architecture from Queen’s University Belfast in 2017. Having previously completed a year long placement with Mott MacDonald in their structures department she developed a passion for the Building Structures sector. Working on a variety of educational and public service buildings Rebecca generated an interest in Building Information Modelling (BIM). This involved producing 3D structural models for collaboration and integration with other disciplines involved.

By gaining a graduate position with Design ID in June 2017 Rebecca aims to increase her exposure to structures with appealing architecture and sustainable design methods.

Stephen graduated from Queen’s University Belfast in 2017 with a Master’s degree in Structural Engineering with Architecture. He was awarded an ICE QUEST Undergraduate Scholarship from the Institution of Civil Engineers throughout the duration of his studies. Stephen also became a STEMNET Ambassador and engaged in activities to promote engineering in the primary and post primary school environment.

During Stephen’s studies he undertook several summer work placements in the Design ID Hillsborough office. After graduation Stephen took up a position as a structural engineer in Design ID London office.

Stephen applies a positive work ethic to all aspects of his projects and his main interests include structural and conceptual design, sustainability and management.

Ryan is completed his Masters at Queens University Belfast, studying ‘Structural Engineering with Architecture’.

Ryan is also one of the founding members of the IStructE Young Members Group and has actively been apart of the Institution since then, helping organising events and promoting engineering, alongside fellow colleague James Walsh.

He has experience in Conceptual, Residential and Commercial Design Projects, utilising a variety of design software, frame and calculation packages. Ryan has also served as a BIM engineer and coordinator on a number of projects, gaining valuable experience and skills on Revit, whilst collaborating with Architects. He also has extensive SketchUp experience which he has developed over the past 4 years and has implemented into conceptual design, and sequencing reports.

Kris has joined DesignID in May 2018. Graduated from Wroclaw University if Environmental and Life Sciences with masters degree in 2003.
Has over 11 years of experience in Roads and Drainage design for various schemes across Northern Ireland. Worked on vast number of private and social housing developments ranging from few to couple of hundred housing units.

Kris is enthusiastic and highly motivated person who has clear understanding of the role and responsibilities associated with working in Civil Engineering field.

James joined Design ID as a Civil and Structural Engineer in 2016 shortly after graduating from Queens University in Belfast with a Masters degree in Structural Engineering with Architecture.

During his time with Design ID James has worked on many and varied projects from drainage and roads design for small housing developments up to the design of large scale steel and concrete structures.

James' main areas of expertise lie with the design of masonry and stone supports and restraints having worked on a large number of varying projects. He has also been responsible for the design and integration of underground drainage and storage systems on many projects throughout the UK.

James is currently the chairman of the Northern Ireland IStructE Young Members Group. Along with the group James is responsible for the organisation of some of the IStructEs most popular events, especially amongst the younger engineering community.

Outside of Design ID, James is very active with preparing for and running marathons, playing for a local football team and he has also achieved a black belt in Jiu Jitsu after years of training.

Ronan Carlin

Ronan studied Civil Engineering at Queen’s University Belfast and graduated top of his class in 2015, winning the Institution of Civil Engineer’s Student Prize. Throughout university, he completed a number of Civil and Structural Engineering placements for Consulting and Contracting firms in Northern Ireland. This has equipped him with a sound knowledge of the field of structural and civil engineering. At university, Ronan was also a member of a design team for the 2015 Concrete Centre Student Design Competition; the team was ranked first place in the UK.

Ronan has carried out detailed structural design for a range of structures including buildings, bridges and geotechnical structures. Furthermore, he has been involved in Due Diligence reports for Contractors, investigating issues such as site access, craneage and temporary works requirements.

Ronan is also active in the local and national engineering institutions. He is a current member of the ICE Graduates and Students Committee, was a finalist for the IStructE Graduates and Students Papers competition in 2014 and was awarded a commendation for the IStructe Kenneth Severn Award in 2016.

In his spare time, Ronan enjoys listening to and producing electronic dance music
