Patient comfort is critical when designing modern healthcare space and modular buildings are the solution for providing open-plan column-free areas rapidly to meet demand.
Design ID provided specialist structural design services for a new permanent facility installed to screen approximately 50 women a day, five days a week. The building, which includes an entrance lobby, waiting area and mammography screening room has been designed taking accessibility and patient comfort into account.
The structural team designed the factory-built modules to accommodate the required medical equipment as proposed by the South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust and the Belfast Health & Social Care Trust. Bespoke loading scenarios were considered for the design of the concrete deck floor, including sizing of the module steelwork for the load applied by lead-lined walls and x-ray apparatus. A footfall analysis was undertaken by the London team to assess the floor response factor against HTM guidance and meet strict dynamic limits enforced by the nature of the medical apparatus.
The base design of the individual modules allows for future flexibility in the floor layout and can easily be expanded with the addition of further bays if healthcare demands increase. The expertise of Design ID’s dedicated modular team resulted in a modern, spacious unit that could be delivered to site on time and to budget whilst meeting the Trust’s brief from a structural perspective.
