To supplement a new 400-home residential development, Ash Manor Secondary School in Surrey was in desperate need for additional classroom space. Design ID’s expertise in both the modular and education sectors suited the vital need for brand new teaching provisions. DID assisted McAvoy with structural and civil design services to deliver a new Art and Design & Technology block. 31 modules erected offsite and assembled on-site as one building, provided 990m2 of state-of-the-art learning spaces with cutting-edge facilities for both Arts and STEM students. The swift turnaround time essential for this type of scheme is where Design ID can guarantee added value.

Both superstructure and substructure elements were constructed within just a 24 week-programme, resulting in minimal disruption to the students and staff compared to traditional construction methods. Design ID’s ongoing work within the modular sector led to a highly efficient and standardised design. Lightweight modules incorporating concrete floors were designed for the applied specialist DT equipment point loads. The chassis was designed as a cold-formed steel frame to provide a lean and cost-effective design solution. The school now also benefits from new IT and server rooms, art storage, studios and a bespoke steel canopy designed by Design ID.

Civil engineering services were also provided for this project. Design ID were responsible for drainage, fire access, haul road and working platform designs. A reinforced grass construction was utilised for the fire access route in order to subtly tie in with the adjoining grass playing fields. Design ID were also responsible for obtaining statutory consents from the council and Thames water for surface water discharging to a water course and foul water discharging to an existing foul sewer.

Furthermore, the efforts of the design team resulted in the contractor receiving a perfect CCS (Considerate Construction Scheme) score of 45/45 with the environmental-conscientious design being highly commended. This covered both the modular superstructure design as well as the lean foundation design for both the new art block and external canopy.

The structural engineering services provided by Design ID has enabled students to enjoy brand new facilities while also giving flexibility for creative subjects in this award-winning modular development.
