Design ID were the consulting structural engineers for the assessment of existing masonry vaults at the historic 18th Century Grade A Listed National Trust property, Castle Ward. The evaluation of the arch identified evidence of flattening to the crown of the vaults. Rather than immediately diverting to intrusive strengthening works, an approach of minimal intervention was adopted, involving replacement of the infill material with a lighter, more breathable fill.
Due to Design ID’s extensive experience with masonry arch assessment and repair, advice was provided on the stability of the vaults in both the existing and temporary condition. The proposed remediation reduced the level of ongoing biological and chemical weathering of the vault, preserving it for future generations.
