EEMS1 DC1 1

Design ID were engaged to provide civil engineering design services and construction support for the EEMS DC1 data centre for QTS data centres. The EEMS DC1 data centre provides 36 MW of utility power and has a total critical power capacity of 20 MW. The data centre facility is over 18,000 m2 in area with over 10,000 m2 of this space allocated for IT equipment and infrastructure.

The EEMS DC1 data centre is located in Eemshaven, Netherlands. The site is adjacent to the EEMS DC2 data centre with the future EEMS DC3 site located nearby also. Together these data centres will create a large-scale operational environment.

The EEMS DC1 data centre required a new fibre network that could support significant data loads with unparalleled efficiency and reliability. Recognising the complexities of the project, we employed a comprehensive approach to design a solution tailored to EEMS DC1 unique requirements. By utilising the latest BIM modelling tools, we ensured that the fibre network would meet the demands of the project specifications.

One of the project’s key challenges was the coordination of the fibre network with mechanical, electrical, communications (M&E) services, and civil works. The fibre network is responsible for transmitting data quickly and efficiently between networks and data centres. The fibre network is the backbone of modern data centres, and the design of these networks is critical to the success of the project. To ensure effective coordination, Design ID conducted extensive clash detection using project BIM models and provided detailed coordinated 3D data to the client team, ensuring seamless integration and transition of fibre network information.

Design ID actively supported the construction phase by addressing Requests for Information (RFI) and evaluating Contractor submittals. With the project’s tight schedule, the team prioritised proactive and transparent communication with the client., addressing design-related queries efficiently. This approach allowed potential design inconsistencies to be identified and resolved early, minimising clashes between design elements. Ultimately, this contributed to delivering a project that upheld both quality standards and budgetary goals.

Our collaborative approach ensures that we work closely with clients maintaining open communication, providing regular updates and adapting to evolving project needs. The successful completion of the fibre network design showcases our technical prowess but also positions us as a trusted collaborator within the data centre industry.
