The Monaghan Peace Campus is an innovative, EU-funded community building that promotes cross-community interaction and social cohesion through its diverse facilities and sustainable design.
The Monaghan Peace Campus is a cutting-edge four-storey mixed-use community building, funded by the EU's PEACE IV Programme. This state-of-the-art facility houses a Cultural Heritage Centre, Library, Youth Facility, Shared Community Multi-Functional Space, External Community Space, and Underground Car Park.
The Monaghan Peace Campus showcases innovative design and sustainable construction techniques. The building's exposed textured concrete, both externally and internally, was achieved through carefully designed elements and reusable formwork liner systems, reducing waste and on-site work. Faced with poor ground conditions and contamination, we implemented a reinforced concrete slab at existing ground level, minimising excavation and incorporating drainage. Sustainability was prioritised through locally sourced concrete with 50% GGBS cement replacement, while exposed finishes reduced the need for additional materials.
As a core element of peacebuilding initiatives, the Peace Campus serves as a vital hub for cross-community interaction and economic regeneration. It provides a neutral, inclusive environment that strengthens relationships between different communities, promoting dialogue and social cohesion in the region. Throughout the project, health and safety measures were paramount, particularly in managing ground contamination and complex temporary works, ensuring a safe construction process for this significant community asset.
