Modern Methods of Construction employed to provide single living accommodation swiftly for the armed forces.

Design ID provided structural engineering consultancy services as part of a crucial upgrade to the defence estate via the completion of a new NetCAP Plus project for the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO). The project involved the design and construction of two new ‘X-Type’ Single Living Accommodation buildings, designated for Phase 1 and Phase 2 military training. In total, the buildings will house 120 military personnel, offering comprehensive amenities including laundry and kitchen facilities.

The dedicated MMC team delivered robust structural solutions, working within a fast-paced timeline. The project was completed in just twenty months, including a five-month period dedicated to securing planning permission. Modularising the ‘external’ plantrooms assisted with meeting the tight programme, with Design ID providing the structural design for the modular chassis to support high plant loads in both the temporary and permanent conditions.

The accommodation is designed for Net Carbon Zero performance to align with the DIO’s sustainability goals and repetition and standardisation in the bay layout led to a reduced number of individual structural elements and less material wastage in the factory. The buildings are another step towards modernising defence infrastructure across the UK.
