Situated on Sketrick Island in Strangford Lough, the site occupies reclaimed land along the shore. The brief was to build a two bedroomed holiday home to Passivhaus standard where focus on the use of sustainable materials was a primary objective of the client and design team. The building has a glazed gable end and large open plan living space, so a framed structure was deemed necessary from the outset.
The Architect had specifically chosen Design ID as the project engineers due to our skills and experience with timber engineering and our solution of a portalised and braced Douglas Fir structural frame certainly married with their principles and objectives. A key requirement of the holiday home was to use low maintenance materials that did not require annual care and attention, thus reducing the whole life costs. The use of Douglas Fir structure and cedar cladding met this requirement.
