The Compass School, Havering

Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) | Education
Compass school 1

Design ID provided full Structural and Civil Engineering design for the construction of a new build SEND school, a large, double storey, modular school building featuring a 2m cantilevered section at first floor level. The school accommodates 60 pupils from primary to secondary school age with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs as well as Communication & Interaction Needs.

Other key features within the design were a large, open plan sports hall, plant rooms and a bio solar roof. The bio solar roof combines the technology of solar energy and green roofs, giving clean energy. This enhances sustainability by improving insulation, reducing urban heat, managing storm water, and promoting biodiversity.

The Compass School is a highly constrained site that required the implementation of several SuDS techniques to reduce the flood risk. In addition to the bio solar roof, permeable paving, filter drains and geocellular attenuation tanks were all implemented on the site. 87% of the project was completed off-site, reducing embodied carbon and simplifying the build process by reducing time onsite.

The volumetric superstructure provides open-plan floor space, with modules arranged to suit the architectural layout. Structural design included design of long span beams supporting the bio solar roof, as well as a front drop-off bespoke entrance canopy and cantilevering modules over the main entrance.
