Modular buildings are the solution for tightly constrained sites with varying levels and complex ground conditions.
Design ID played a pivotal role in the Ysgol Plasmawr project, where the team provided innovative engineering solutions to address the site’s challenging ground conditions. The project involved designing foundations and steelwork for McAvoy's SmartClass modular units, tailored specifically to overcome numerous site constraints, including significant level changes, highly shrinkable soils, low bearing capacity soils, contaminated ground and existing trees to be retained.
Through a lean foundation solution, Design ID ensured a stable and efficient substructure for the factory-produced modules, ensuring groundworks could progress simultaneously with the factory programme. The design for the foundations included a dedicated access ramp to overcome elevation changes. Design ID’s expertise in civil and structural engineering facilitated a streamlined construction process, keeping on-site time to just 15 weeks.
In addition to addressing the ground challenges, the project integrated sustainable practices through the efficient use of materials. Design ID facilitated McAvoy in delivering a high-quality educational space for SEN pupils within a tight timeframe, ensuring that the new facilities were ready for students and staff with minimal disruption to the existing school timetable.
The project's success showcases the Design ID modular team’s expertise the MMC space, providing a tailored solution that met the needs of both the contractor and the school community.
